TIPS TO CONNECT WITH ANY AUDIENCE, ANYTIME

Whenever I receive good feedback after a presentation or hosting gig, I often get asked, “Are you with our company? What department are you in?” Sometimes they’ll say, “You’re really natural and you know so much about our industry.”

The truth is, I cannot possibly know as much as they think I know about their company or industry. But what they’re actually describing is relatability, familiarity and empathy.

The Common Denominator to Build Connection

Speaking to the audience as if they’re a really good friend is immediately disarming. And focusing on the human experience of what makes us all feel the same, fosters that relatability. Every company may have their own unique brand, product, service and sector. But here’s the common denominator:

  • Everybody works hard.
  • Many people spend more time at work than with their families.
  • Everybody knows what it’s like to have to sacrifice their time for the collective goal.
  • Everybody feels pride and relief after a big achievement.
  • Everybody achieves more through teamwork.
  • No CEO or manager hit plan by themselves.
  • Change is uncomfortable for everyone.
  • We’ve all felt disappointment when what we work hard towards doesn’t come through.
  • If somebody wants something from you, you need to know why it matters to you and for the team.
  • We all want to feel seen, heard and understood.

How to Craft Your Messaging

So when you’re thinking about how to get your message across or debating what kinds of content would be relevant to your audience, tailor your narrative and supporting evidence to focus on what makes us all the same. That’s how your presentation or conversation will really land.

That’s what people mean when they say, “He’s such a natural up there!” They mean that he’s relatable and accessible and feels familiar. Because that person is not just speaking to you, they’re speaking about you. Those are words to describe an empathic communicator.
