Have you thought about the power of storytelling? Telling stories in business needs to be purposeful, appropriate for your audience and authentic! In this video, I share practical tips and how to deliver a compelling story.

Unleash the Power of Storytelling

If stories are used well, you allow your audience to sense the opportunity you’re presenting to them.

  • Through stories you help the audience visualize and feel something (ideally directly related and involves you in some way…and something that would be relatable to audience too)
  • Real life experiences, memories, imagination
  • Telling stories in business needs to be purposeful, appropriate for your audience and authentic!
  • Have them really connect to a pain point. Be honest. Show them, tell them how you felt and why it drove you to action.
  • Be vivid in your descriptions, paint the picture clearly. Use it to make a point, lead you to your next idea/highlight a pain point and show what you propose to fix this.
  • Be as vivid in your expressions, choice or words etc. Paint the picture clearly.
    • 5 storytelling tips:
      • Purposeful Why are you telling this story? What do you want them to do/say/feel when you finish? Test your purpose by finishing off with the line “So why am I sharing this story with you?”
      • Authentic Tell stories that matter to you. Telling stories you don’t believe in is a fast track to breeding cynicism and breaking trust.
      • Relatable Try to put yourself in the story or talk about something you saw and rad firsthand and how it made you feel. Humanize the experience.
      • Simple Less is often more. Keep your point clear and simple. Leave room for people’s imaginations to create the picture.
      • Project the mood Relish the moment. Telling a story and sharing information are 2 different things.

I’ve realized this is really helpful in connecting with people because humanizing the experience, no matter the subject or the stakes when presenting, is really powerful! Don’t be anybody other than YOU. We only feel self-conscious when we are trying to be someone other than ourselves. Keep the language simple and easy to digest so you don’t lose them or confuse them.
